Guides to using Zoom for lace and textile teaching
Elsewhere on my website I write about using Zoom for remote lace classes. Initially I was happy that my students were able to connect with whatever internet devices they had, and consulting the Zoom Help Centre generally sorted out our teething problems. However I soon realized that teaching lacemaking has particular requirements not covered in general support articles — presenting and viewing details of lace in closeup — something which standard laptop computer cameras are not designed for. After researching this I decided to write what I had found in a short guide, a task complicated by the different devices people use — computers, tablets and phones — and their different operating systems. Having done that — or actually them, one for tutors, one for students — I am happy to offer them to teachers of lacemaking and other textiles. Voila!
What’s covered includes:
- Lighting and personal presentation
- Presenting lace samples in close-up detail
- Working on the fly (sketching etc.) with good definition
- Presenting photos or diagrams stored on a device
- Physical support of devices
- Mac and Windows computers
- iPhones
- Android phones
- iPads
- Android tablets
